    • Your muscles carry stores of glycogen, which can give bursts of immediate energy, but which are quickly depleted. This is when you feel the burning "pain" in your legs as you are running; if you keep going you start to switch to do anaerobic exercise, which is basically your body burning fat to supply energy. The more you exercise, the better your body becomes at both storing glycogen and switching to anaerobic metabolism. This is what we mean by stamina.
