- When connecting a battery, which cable do I connect first?
louiecski answered:
- Positive first, THEN negative. When you do the opposite, what you've done is ground the battery to the car, so accidentally touching the car with your wrench while hooking up the positive will short the battery (SPARKS! Shocks!). Always positive first. If connecting jumper cables, put the negative clamp onto a metal part of the engine - the engine mounts are good for this if you can reach one of them.

- I have heard that it's fine. I have the flu. I have not been rubbing it on myself, but using it in the vaporizer.

- I have a 5 year old girl that every time the cold season comes she gets a chronic cough. I've been to the pulmonologist 3 times. They did a blood test, sweat test, and allergy test; all were negative. I want to know if there are any home remedy treatments or cough medicine I should give her. P.S. She has a humidifier in her room every day. Plus, I give her a steam bath all the time.

- You seem to have done all the right things. There is an herbal remedy called Echinachea for children. This helps during the winter months for those who are prone to colds and coughs. Steam inhalation is good. If you have central heating try and crack a window or make sure you humidify. Hope this helps a bit.

- Any ideas on how to keep your gums from bleeding when brushing teeth? I already use a soft toothbrush and when I spit it is bloody.

- Actually bleeding gums could be a sign of disease like gingivitis. Get a toothpaste that aids in preventing this or go to your dentist. Also, flossing helps to toughen up gums. That's how the dentist usually knows if you're flossing or not. If you bleed you don't floss!

- My parents will shortly be facing the issue of not being able to handle their own finances and care. My sister is suggesting that we give her new husband (who is an accountant) power of attorney. I think it should be split between the three siblings. Can anyone tell me how this would be done?

- Almost anyone who knows how to be careful with money can handle finances. Give him POA for financial, medical and Medicare/Social Security purposes if he is willing but set up an oversight procedure so you and your siblings can be kept informed on a periodic basis that minimizes extra work by the POA person. The POA person should not mind at all if everything is kept above board and if he objects, that is an early indicator that things should be done differently.
  Your parents should set up living wills if they don't already have them so there is no question regarding their wishes.

- Wash your hands frequently and don't touch your eyes or anyone else's. It will be harder for a toddler to do that, since they touch all sorts of things and rub their eyes. Pink eye is spread so easily. That's why a lot of day care centers and schools won't let kids come to school with it. Check with your pediatrician as well.

- You can get fomula that is specially made for babies the regurgitate more than normal, or you could switch to a soy formula.

- I have serious heartburn several times during the day and night. I have found that a teaspoonful of baking soda in a little water gives me fast relief. Is this harmful? I have been taking it for several months now.
Ethmer answered:
- It is only harmful because it is allowing you to relieve the symptom but not cure the problem.
  If you can't afford to see a doctor or clinic, then at least consider using Prilosec OTC which is an over-the-counter equivalent to prescription drugs like Omeprazole and Nexium.
  
  Prilosec and the others are acid blockers which reduce the amount of stomach acid that your stomach makes. They are usually taken once a day although i take mine, Omeprazole, twice a day as prescribed.
  By reducing the acid, these blockers give the body a chance to heal the esophagus which could be inflamed and ulcerous.
  If you can afford a visit to a clinic or medical doctor, i would advise you to get an appointment for an endoscopy which would examine your esophagus to determine if there is any serious damage and what medicines might be needed.
  
  What you have is GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) and can lead to serious complications (even cancer), so it is well worth getting it looked into.

- I'm a cosmetologist. Actually it does help, but so slightly you won't even notice. Hair loss IS hereditary, meaning it's already a done deal. And please don't fall for any of the bogus "cures." None of them work. If you're a guy, don't worry about it. Some of the hottest men I know are totally bald. If you're a woman, wigs are your best friend - just buy decent ones.

- Your muscles carry stores of glycogen, which can give bursts of immediate energy, but which are quickly depleted. This is when you feel the burning "pain" in your legs as you are running; if you keep going you start to switch to do anaerobic exercise, which is basically your body burning fat to supply energy. The more you exercise, the better your body becomes at both storing glycogen and switching to anaerobic metabolism. This is what we mean by stamina.

Last week, the Q&A of the Week was about a mom trying to convince her daughter to seek treatment for bipolar disorder. Twenty Weekly Wondir subscribers took the opportunity to offer more advice through our Wondir Health Blog.

In last week's featured question, mhashimoto wrote:
- I think my adult child is bipolar. She doesn't believe there is such a thing. Her father doesn't either, he thinks things like ADHD, depression, etc. are cop outs. How can I convince her that she could benefit from counseling? She can't hold a job, finish tasks, gets angry and can be violent (went to court today over domestic violence arrest), and is unmotivated.
- Wondir user Meg replied:
- "Bipolar is a recognized illness with mood swings from highs to lows. It can be greatly helped and even fully controlled by the right drugs. People with untreated bipolar can end up in jail, in mental hospitals or on the streets."
- "I suggest that you seek a family psychologist for you to talk to first. I've experienced a similar situation and was given excellent advice on what behavior I would see from my child, and how to approach the issue with other family members. Be aware that the first person you seek for profesional assistance may not work for you or other family members. I talked to three different counselors/psychologists before finding one that everyone was comfortable with."
Many replies discussed the importance of "tough love." Wondir users suggested that mhashimoto tell her daughter she will not offer any help or assistance or support unless the daughter seeks help.

- Unfortunately, you can benefit from counseling only when you realize you have a problem and have the will to work on it. I wonder how your husband explains her behavior. Is she happy? I am sorry not much help here.

- No it's not bad. It's better to realize you may not get pregnant, than to dwell on it and become severely depressed. If it's meant to be, it will be. I wish you the best of luck and pray you will get your little miracle. There's also adoption to consider, Those kids are in so much need of a family. They would not only be your child, but they were chosen by you which makes them all the more special.

- If a doctor hasn't told you that you are unable to have a child, then you will get pregnant. It's just not the right time. My husband and I tried for a year then gave up and said that it would happen when the time was right. It did.

- My husband has food issues. He seems to watch everything me and my son (his stepson) eat. He will buy a bag full of candy bars and know exactly how many of each there are. If one is missing, he will get upset and want to know who ate his candy bar. Usually if my son ate it, I will say that I ate it, because if I tell him my son ate it he will get mad and yell. I can't figure out if this is just a selfish behavior, or if he has some kind of food phobia. Our marriage counselor basically told him to "get over it". If all the food in the house is eaten, we will go to the store and buy more. Has anyone else ever known a person with this problem?

- Baby Oragel or Anbesol will numb the gums. My daughter uses clean baby washcloths soaked and squeezed out, then formed into rings and placed in the freezer. The baby is soothed by the coldness of the cloth, and it is safe to drink the melting water.

Smoking is harder to stop than anyother habit you can have. I smoked for 35+ years, but with medical help (if it won't harm the baby) and support from family and friends, you can have a good shot at breaking the habit. Just one day at a time, one minute at a time. Best of Luck!!!

I was in the same boat when I first found out I was pregnant. But it was easy for me to stop because I was pregnant last year and I miscarried at 7 weeks. The doctor told me it was due to my smoking habit. He said it was a chromosome abnormality due to smoking, so when I found I was pregnant this time...I quit within the week. It was one of the hardest things I could do, but I wanted this baby more then I wanted to smoke. If you try, you will succeed. Good luck quitting... and just think about the little one inside.

Smoking is a mind thing. You think you have to have a cigarette, but all you have to do is control what your mind is trying to convince you of! Think of that precious life that's being exposed to something that's going to cause him or her to have asthma or bronchitis! If you love your baby, please stop smoking for both of your sakes!

- If you cared enough you would stop. Sorry that sounds harsh, but you are really harming your child.

- It can be very hard, and I will not judge you because I have been there before! Try to at least cut back. Plan to only smoke 5, then the next day 4, and so on, until you are not smoking anymore. That's what I did. It's also helpful to only take a few puffs to satisfy you and then put it out. Good luck.

Prepare more healthful meals. If that's what is put in front of them, then that's what they will eat. Our children also don't get the proper excercise, so they become overweight. Many sit in front of video games instead of getting outside and playing ball. More healthful meals may not be all that's neccesary.

- I was 18 when I found out I was pregnant. I found the best way was to just come out and tell them. I know it's going to be hard, but once it's over, it's like a huge weight is lifted off your shoulders.

- My husband's daughter got pregnant at 15, and was so afraid to tell him that his ex had to. She and I talked about the baby more openly. He was very hurt, and I could tell it would have been better if she was just honest with him. If you don't have a good relationship with your parents, if they abuse you, maybe you can tell them in a presence of a counselor or preacher. Your mental and physical health will affect the baby, don't let the confrontation hurt the child. If you are thinking about abortion, you will need a lot of moral support.

Wondir allows users to ask just about any question, and anyone using the Web site can submit one. You don't have to sign in to ask a question or submit an answer, but you might want to.

To ask a question, you can select a category from the top right side of the page. Once you're happy with your category, click on the ask a question button on the top left side of the page.

Write out your question, read over it to catch any confusing misspellings, then click the ask button. You will then be taken to a results page. If you don't see it immediately, don't ask again. It can take a few seconds to show up on the page.

To answer a question, click on the question you would like to answer. Type your answer, read over it, then hit the Post button. After a few seconds, you will be directed back to the question page.

Moderators can ban anyone who abuses Wondir rules. They can also move questions to more appropriate sections, and delete multiple postings of the same question.

- There are more risks if you're an older mother (like Down syndrome and twins), but it is not uncommon at all. I'm sure your doctor can go over some of the added risks with you.

- They say having children over the age of 35 can be more risky, but lots of people do it. If you are prepared for a little bundle of joy, all the best to you.

- I know a lady who gave birth at fifty. You have higher risk of having a baby with Down syndrome, and you will be tested with an amniocentesis later in the pregnancy. It is a long needle that is stuck in your belly and through that sac, the doctor then draws fluid through it and tests the fluid for Down syndrome.

Want to email a specific Wondir member with a question? It's easy.

First, make sure you have a confirmed email. If you have the by your name, then your email has been confirmed.
Once that's been determined, go to the personal profile page of the person you want to email. Do this by clicking on their name anywhere you see it on the site. Once you are on their personal profile page, click the "Email me with a question" link, write out your question and hit the green "Ask" button.
Facts about emailing questions:

Your question will also be posted on the question board
The link will only be visible for members who have an email address on file and who have not exceeded their received email limit

To set your email limit, click on the "Profile Information" link in your Question Control Panel
To block a specific member from contacting you, click on the link next to, "To block from contacting you" near the bottom of any New Wondir Question email from that member

- I had a mammogram last Friday and the nurse called today to tell me the pathologist found a some dense areas in one breast, so I need to go back in to get it redone or may have to have an ultrasound done, what does this mean?? Should I be concerned?

- I had a similar experience. After my first mammogram, I was called and told I had to go to hospital as they had found dense area in my right breast. At the hospital, I was given another mammogram, and then an ultrasound, and the dense mass was still there. So to be sure they did a biopsy. The biopsy revealed it was a fibroidous cyst - very common and benign. Please do not be overly concerned. Most of these dense areas are fibrous cysts, nothing to worry about. Do not worry - even if it is the worse possible outcome, they would only remove a small part through biopsy. I would not stress out - they are just doing their jobs, and have to investigate further, wait for more information.

In our last newsletter, our question of the week was from 16-year-old kristenandsprout. She asked about dealing with her mom and stepdad's support during her pregnancy. 32momto4 told her to be honest about her feelings. - I'm 14 weeks pregnant with my first child, and with not being married it's lonely and my fears are multiplied. I have a great mom and step dad but they want to be "mom" and "dad" and they are scaring me by saying when the baby is here that they are going to raise him or her and I won't have to grow up. It's so crazy. I'm only 16 but I know I don't want my baby to have to call someone else mommy! What do I do? How do I tell them without getting into trouble?

- Wow, what a hard position you are in. I can only imagine how you must feel. I think it's very mature of you to want to raise your own child and be the mommy yourself rather than have your child call grandma "mommy." It seems to me that you should just be honest and tell them your feelings. Tell them that you appreciate their offer to help, and that you will need their help from time to time, but that you want the responsibility of raising this child. I believe it is possible to live with your parents and raise your own child, but you will have to be firm about doing things your way.
  I lived with my mother and father-in-law for a while when we had our first son, and boy was it a challenge. She thought she had ALL the answers and wouldn't stop telling me what to do all the time with the baby. Now, I was an adult, so that makes a difference I know, but it was still difficult. I just had to be very firm about what I wanted (not letting the baby cry, breastfeeding, ...) because she was very old school and thought that I was spoiling the baby by not letting him cry and that bottle feeding was best.
  To make a long story short, I think you will just need to tell them that you plan to raise your own child but with their help. Hopefully they will support your decision and help you!

- Acknowledge you have a problem and you're halfway there. Do you have people around you that you can trust to talk to? When you do feel down try to keep calm and ask questions. If something is getting you down within your relationship talk to your partner and let her/him know that you are worried but need to know honestly if there is anything to worry about; listen to what s/he tells you with an open mind and if you start to feel bad work out what s/he said that made you feel that way. Don't be tempted to keep things to yourself, as this will only make you feel worse. With time you can learn to trust your partner but s/he must be aware of your problem and treat you with care and support you when you feel down.

Tortured Artist asked in the Mental Health category:
- Someone PLEASE try to help me... I have a strange problem. Okay, I have been in therapy for various problems (mostly post-traumatic stress disorder) since November of 2004. It's been such a long time, and I'm beginning to feel obligated to "graduate" therapy. Problem is, my therapist and I have become very close (she's almost like a mom to me), so how do I say I need to move on? How do I break ties with a person who basically saved my life and sanity? I don't want to bring this up in our next session because it's embarrassing.
Laurs answered:
- There comes a time when you move on from your therapy. I was in therapy for 3 years after my parents divorced, and one week I realized...as wonderful as my shrink was...I didn't need her anymore.
  Just continue with her casually. You don't have to end your sessions immediately, you can taper off until you're ready to "leave the nest" completely. She will totally understand...her job is to help fix what ails you, and when you don't need to go anymore, that means she was successful in helping you heal.
